Stone worktops for New Forest homes: older properties, holiday lets and bathrooms

Since our Lyndhurst showroom opened in October 2025, we've noticed that people from around the New Forest tend to ask the same few questions. They're rarely about colour first. They're about the house: walls that aren't straight, a holiday let that needs to cope with a busy summer, or a bathroom that deserves the same care as the kitchen.
This guide covers what we've learned, to help you choose between granite, marble, quartzite, quartz, porcelain and sintered stone for a home in Lyndhurst or anywhere in the New Forest and Hampshire.
Older homes rarely have straight walls
Many New Forest homes are cottages, converted barns or older properties that have settled over time. Walls bow, corners aren't square and floors slope slightly.
This matters more with stone than with laminate or timber, because stone can't be trimmed on site. It has to be cut correctly first time. We template every job digitally, recording the real shape of your walls and units rather than the measurements on a plan, so the worktop is cut to fit the room you actually have.
Weight matters too. A stone worktop is heavy and older or reused cabinetry isn't always built to carry it. If you're keeping existing units, tell us early so we can check they're up to it before anything is ordered.
In this particular project, the wall wasn't straight, so the stone was cut to follow it.
Marble and everyday cleaning
Marble is one of the most popular materials we show in Lyndhurst and one of the most misunderstood. It contains calcite, which reacts with acid. Limescale removers, vinegar, lemon juice and some bathroom cleaners can leave dull marks known as etching.
Plenty of people choose marble knowing this and like the way it wears over time. If you'd rather not think about it, granite, quartz, porcelain and sintered stone are far more tolerant of everyday cleaning products (always check the manufacturer's care guide).
A tip on quartzite: true quartzite is very hard and resists acid well, but some stones sold under that name contain calcite and behave more like marble. If you're considering quartzite, ask us about the specific stone rather than the category.
Holiday lets and second homes
The New Forest has plenty of holiday lets. If you own one, your worktop will be used by people who don't know how to look after it and you won't be there when something goes wrong.
We'd usually point holiday let owners towards forgiving materials. Porcelain and sintered stone handle heat well, so a hot pan put straight down is less of a worry. Quartz is hard wearing and low maintenance but shouldn't take direct heat, so trivets are worth leaving out. Marble is best saved for your own kitchen.
A honed or leathered finish, or a stone with some pattern, will also hide everyday marks better than a pale, highly polished surface.
It's not only kitchens
We're often asked whether we only do kitchen worktops. We don't. A lot of the stone we fabricate goes into bathrooms: vanity tops, shower shelves, window sills and wall panels, templated, made and fitted the same way as a kitchen.
Bathrooms are also where material choice matters most for cleaning. Limescale builds up quickly around taps and showers and the products used to remove it are exactly the ones that mark marble. If you love the look of marble in a bathroom, porcelain and sintered stone come in marble effect designs that cope with descalers. If you want the real thing, choose it knowing it will need gentler cleaning.
We also make stone for utility rooms, fireplaces and bespoke furniture. If you've got an idea that isn't a kitchen, bring it in and ask.
From Lyndhurst to Frome: what happens after you choose
Our Lyndhurst showroom, on the High Street, is a samples and consultation space. It's where you can compare materials side by side, see finishes and edge profiles, and talk through your project with us.
The making happens at our factory and slab yard in Frome, Somerset, where we've been fabricating stone for over 25 years. Once your quote is agreed:
We order your material.
Our own team templates your kitchen or bathroom digitally, once your units are fitted.
The stone is cut and finished in our Frome factory.
Our own fitters install it.
From template to fit usually takes about a week. We don't subcontract any of it, so the people who measure your room and the people who make and fit your stone work for the same company.

Your plan or measurements, even rough ones
A cabinet door or colour sample
Photos of the room, including the floor and walls
A rough idea of budget and timing
