More about

granite

The name granite comes from the Latin word granum, which means “grain”.

How granite forms

Pressure from the earth’s surface forces magma between layers of rock, cooling and crystallising into solid granite. Then, over time, wind, ice and water wear away the overlying rocks to expose the granite.

Granite properties

Granite stone is a hard, tough rock that’s resistant to heat and scratches and makes up a large part of the earth’s crust. Significantly, its colour can be red, pink, grey or white as determined by the proportion of its minerals, with dark mineral grains visible to the naked eye.

Granite uses

Granite is used in construction materials, ornamental stone and monuments, as well as kitchen countertops of course. Crushed granite is used in asphalt and concrete for highways and other infrastructure projects.
